Japan US preliminary talks on trans-Pacific FTA to begin Tues.Japan and the United States will begin preliminary talks related to a new trans-Pacific free trade agreement next Tuesday, the Japanese government said Thursday.

The focus of the upcoming meeting will be on how Tokyo deals with U.S. calls for further opening up of Japan's vehicle and farm markets.

The outcome of the consultations is expected to heavily influence whether Japan joins the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade negotiations.

Japan will send director general-level officials for the meeting in Washington to be attended by U.S. Assistant Trade Representative Wendy Cutler, said Cabinet Office Senior Vice Minister Katsuyuki Ishida, who heads a government group on TPP issues.
