Japan's anime market hits record high

Japan's anime market hit a record high in 2018 for the 6th consecutive year. Overseas markets accounted for nearly half of the total.

The Association of Japanese Animations determines the annual market size by surveying sales figures for about 150 animation-related companies in Japan.

According to the report, the anime industry's earnings were about 19.9 billion dollars last year, up 174 million dollars from the year before.

Overseas markets, including movie screenings and game sales, accounted for 46 percent of the total, at 9.23 billion dollars.

Sales of DVDs and other video packages dropped about a quarter to 537 million dollars, surpassed by sales through online distribution which were valued at 544 million dollars.
