Kato: War Memorial Ceremony May Be Scaled Down

Kato: War memorial ceremony may be scaled down

Japan's health minister has indicated the government is considering scaling down its annual ceremony in August commemorating the war-dead.

Kato Katsunobu told reporters on Tuesday that full precautions must be taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Kato said the scale and method of the ceremony are being studied in line with the government's coronavirus guidelines on large-scale events. He said he hopes to announce a decision as soon as possible.

More than 6,200 bereaved families and others attended last year's ceremony held at the Budokan Hall in Tokyo. The event takes place on August 15, when people in Japan commemorate the end of World War Two.
