Kishida to pledge $200 mil. to help address global food crisis

NHK has learned that Japan plans to provide about 200 million dollars to help address a global food crisis amid Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is expected to announce the plan when the G7 leaders discuss Ukraine and food security in Schloss Elmau, southern Germany, on Monday.

Officials says the fund would probably be used to help build storage facilities for wheat and other crops in Ukraine, whose exports have been disrupted by Russia's blockade of sea ports.

They say the aid would also likely be extended to Middle Eastern and African countries that are being hit hard by soaring food prices.

At the session, Kishida is expected to call for substantial support for countries facing a food crisis.

He also plans to tell the other leaders that Japan will provide 1.1 billion dollars to Ukraine and relevant parties.

The amount includes additional humanitarian assistance now under consideration.
