Investigators say the suspect in a deadly arson attack at an animation studio in Kyoto may have been in the area a few days earlier, possibly waiting for a chance to set the fire.
They say 41-year-old Shinji Aoba is thought to have visited a store near Kyoto Animation after he arrived in the city. They believe he purchased containers to carry gasoline.
Two or three days before the attack, a woman living in the neighborhood reportedly saw a man resembling Aoba with two containers outside a convenience store about 200 meters from the animation studio.
Thursday's fire left 34 people dead and 34 others injured.
Aoba sustained serious burns and is being treated at a hospital in Osaka.
Police plan to serve an arrest warrant as soon as he recovers.
