Large Artificial Ski Slope Opens In Yuzawa

Large artificial ski slope opens in YuzawaA ski resort in the Yuzawa area of Niigata Prefecture, central Japan, has opened one of the nation's largest artificial ski slopes.
A ceremony to mark the completion of the dry slope was held on Monday. The slope, which is 20 meters wide and 1.1 kilometers long, is covered with white plastic mats.

Free-style skier Ayana Onozuka was the first to go down the all-season slope. She won the bronze medal in the women's half-pipe at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Onozuka said the surface felt like frozen granular snow, and was easier to ski on than she had expected.
