Memorial service pays tribute to late Mainichi president SaitoA memorial service paying tribute to Akira Saito, the late former president of The Mainichi Newspapers Co., was held in Tokyo on July 31, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe among some 1,200 people who attended.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, Democratic Party of Japan leader Banri Kaieda, New Komeito leader Natsuo Yamaguchi, former Japan Business Federation chairmen Takashi Imai and Hiroshi Okuda, and actress Sayuri Yoshinaga were also among the many attendees, who placed flowers on an altar decorated with 6,000 phalaenopsis aphrodite flowers and lilies to create an image of Mount Fuji.

At the venue, a panel was set up displaying items including a Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association prize that Saito received as the leader of a team of reporters.
