Military-civilian airport opens in Iwakuni, 1st flight leaves for Haneda A new military-civilian airport opened Thursday in the western Japan city of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where the U.S. Marine Corps operates an air station, with the first departure flight an All Nippon Airways plane bound for Tokyo's Haneda airport.

Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport is the second airport to be jointly used by U.S. forces in Japan and civilian air carriers after an airport in Misawa in northeastern Japan's Aomori Prefecture used by the U.S. Air Force and Japan's Air Self-Defense Force.

The U.S. military continues to hold air traffic control rights at Iwakuni airport, which is also used by Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force.
