Minister: Anti-virus efforts may be insufficient

A Japanese government minister has expressed concern that efforts against the coronavirus may be insufficient.

Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi was speaking at a meeting of a government panel of experts on Wednesday. Nishimura is in charge of anti-coronavirus measures.

Nishimura said the number of new infections in the country is rising, and that there is a sense of crisis that efforts may be insufficient.

He expressed concern about media reports that people are flocking to parks, tourist spots, supermarkets and shopping streets.

He added that in 34 prefectures other than those designated for special alert, measures to prevent infection have not been thoroughly observed.

Nishimura said that ahead of the spring holiday period, there are concerns that people will travel to other prefectures and visit tourist spots.
