Minister: Typhoon damages over 670 schools

Japan's education minister says more than 670 educational facilities were damaged by Typhoon Hagibis.

Koichi Hagiuda told reporters on Tuesday that as of 5 a.m., 678 institutions including kindergartens, elementary, junior high and high schools as well as universities in 10 prefectures suffered flooding, rain leaking and other problems.

Hagiuda added that ministry officials have been dispatched to affected institutions to check the scope of the damage.

He said the ministry will coordinate efforts with relevant municipalities in ensuring the safety of the institutions, adding that it will do its utmost in helping restore areas hit by the typhoon.
