No air con in most of Tokyo's heatstroke deaths

Tokyo officials say 187 people died of heatstroke in August in the Japanese capital. Of those people, 178 passed away indoors.

The Medical Examiner's Office says 95 percent of those who perished indoors were not using air conditioners.

Senior citizens aged 65 or higher accounted for 89 percent of all fatalities. Sixty-seven of the 187 victims were in their 70s, 66 were in their 80s and there was an equal number in their 60s and 90s, at 21.

Forty-seven people died during the day and 55 at night, while the time of death remains unknown for the rest.

The number of people who died in their sleep was noticeable.

The Meteorological Agency says the sizzling heat will continue in September. Officials are advising people to take sufficient precautions against heatstroke.
