No flights affected at New Chitose Airport

Transport authorities say New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido has reopened one of its two runways.

The airport closed both of its runways for safety checks after an earthquake hit the northern prefecture on Thursday.

The other runway remains closed.

Airport authorities say no flights have been affected as of 10:00PM.

Transportation authorities in Sapporo say the city's subway system has been closed for the day and will try to resume normal operations from Friday morning.

The Hokkaido Railway Company, also known as JR Hokkaido, says it has suspended train services on several sections, including the one between Minami-Chitose and New Chitose Airport.
