NTT to use AI to prevent phone scams

Japanese telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, or NTT, plans to launch a service using artificial intelligence to help prevent phone scams.

The NTT group on Friday demonstrated the service to be available from next Monday.

It involves a device attached to the user's fixed-line phone and an AI program that analyzes conversation in real time.

If a conversation contains keywords such as "remittance" or "bank account," or its context leads the AI to suspect the caller may be a scammer, the system emails or calls the user or family members to raise an alarm.

In the demonstration, a caller asked a user to transfer 5 million yen, or about 48,000 dollars, to settle a traffic accident. In the middle of the conversation, the user's mobile phone received an audio message urging the user to contact a family member, saying the caller may have been a swindler.

NTT West senior official Kitamoto Hitoshi says the NTT group wants to help prevent people from falling victim to scams that are becoming more sophisticated and complex.

The service is expected to cost about 4 dollars per month.
