A rescue operation is underway at a nursing home in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, where about 260 people are reportedly stranded due to a flood.
Police and fire officials say the Oppe River overflowed and flooded a large part of the Shimo-osaka district in the city of Kawagoe.
They are using boats to rescue seniors and staff members of the Kawagoe Kings Garden nursing home.
The officials say that people had fled the residence building that was being flooded and moved to a taller neighboring building.
Footage shot from an NHK helicopter at about 10:30 a.m. shows their residence flooded with murky brown water.
It shows rescuers evacuating people on a boat.
