Opposition party leader comments on LDP election

The head of Japan's largest opposition Constitutional Democratic Party has commented on the leadership race in the main governing Liberal Democratic Party.

CDP Leader Edano Yukio spoke to reporters on Friday as the campaign period for the LDP's election to choose its new president started.

He said the job of lawmakers is to deliberate in the Diet, and that the government is not for the LDP but for the people.

Edano also said even though it is fine for the party to hold a presidential election, he wants LDP members to do their jobs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and focus on the election afterward.

He added that no matter who becomes the new LDP president, his party will carry out its duties. Edano also said his party will start preparing for the next Lower House election.
