Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has been defeated in the first round of Wimbledon.
World No.2 Osaka lost 7-6, 6-2 to Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan on the first day of the grass-court tournament on Monday.
In the first set, Osaka lost her rhythm and made a string of errors, losing after a tiebreak. She struggled to cope with the solid strokes of Putintseva, who is ranked 39th, before losing the second set.
She suffered a straight defeat from the same opponent in a match held prior to the tournament.
It is her first defeat in the first round of any Grand Slam tournament since the French Open in 2017.
Her hopes of returning to the No.1 spot following the tournament have now been dashed.
