Panel On Coronavirus To Be Reorganized

Panel on coronavirus to be reorganized

The Japanese government says it will reorganize the expert group that gives advice on the country's coronavirus measures in order to reflect broader views on policies.

Nishimura Yasutoshi, the minister in charge of the national coronavirus response, on Wednesday referred to the current panel of experts.

He said the panel's members have expressed regret that they are giving the impression they are the ones deciding government measures regarding the coronavirus.

Nishimura said he wants to reorganize the panel as it is a time when experts are reviewing their work on the panel.

Nishimura said he plans to abolish the current expert panel and replace it with a newly set-up subcommittee.

Its members will include local government officials and crisis management experts, in addition to experts on infectious diseases.

The group will analyze the situation of infections, and discuss measures to deal with a possible resurge in new infections. Members will also discuss ways to administer vaccines when they become available.

Nishimura hopes to hold the first meeting of the new subcommittee early next month.
