People move up Japan travels to avoid quarantine

People trying to get to Japan from China and South Korea are rushing to complete the trip before the government starts quarantining all arrivals from the two countries.

The Japanese government said earlier this week that from Monday it will require everyone coming from the two neighboring countries to be isolated at designated facilities for two weeks, as part of measures to stem the spread of the new coronavirus.

Japanese nationals will also be subject to the policy.

Some travelers at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Saturday morning said they had returned to Japan earlier than planned, while others said they had moved up their business trips. Many were wearing face masks.

A woman in her 30s said she originally planned to return from South Korea with her two children next week, but she came back on Saturday instead.

She said she agrees with the decision to restrict entry into Japan, but she is worried because her husband is still in South Korea.

A South Korean man in his 50s who came to Japan for work said he was surprised by the announcement and decided to come early as a result. He said he will return to South Korea later on Saturday. The man said he hopes the virus will be contained and things will return to normal as soon as possible.
