Record heat across Japan

Japan had another hot day on Wednesday, with record-high temperatures in many areas.

Much of Japan was engulfed by a high-pressure system that brought clear skies and abundant sunshine.

The city of Isezaki in Gunma Prefecture had a daytime high of 40 degrees Celsius.

Record-high temperatures were observed at six locations across the country.

Seven locations in the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, and neighboring Yamanashi Prefecture had highs of 39 degrees or above.

Temperatures of 35 degrees or higher were recorded at 151 locations nationwide, including Nagoya, Kyoto and central Tokyo.

Overnight lows are not expected to fall below 25 degrees, and another scorching day is forecast for Thursday.

People are advised to stay hydrated and use air conditioners appropriately to avoid heatstroke.
