Record Number Of Japanese Households On Welfare

Record number of Japanese households on welfareJapanese government officials say a record number of households are on welfare due to an increase in elderly people who need support.
Welfare ministry officials said the total number of households that received assistance in May stood at more than 1.6 million. That's up about 1,600 from the previous month.

Households headed by seniors aged 65 or older accounted for about half the total, rising to nearly 800 thousand. That's up by more than 1,400.

Other households on welfare such as those of working age people fell by more than 500 to 274 thousand.

The number of welfare households with members who are sick or injured was almost flat at 255 thousand.

Ministry officials say the number of households on welfare will likely rise in the future, along with the population of aged recipients.
