A rescue operation is underway at a nursing home in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, where about 220 people are stranded due to a flood.
Police and fire officials say the Oppe River overflowed and flooded a large part of the Shimo-osaka district in the city of Kawagoe.
They are using boats to rescue seniors and staff members from the Kawagoe Kings Garden nursing home.
The officials say that people had previously been evacuated from the flooded one-story residences to neighboring buildings with two stories.
Footage shot from an NHK helicopter at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday shows the residences surrounded bv muddy water. It shows rescuers evacuating people by boat.
Kawagoe city officials say forty other people from a nearby facility for the disabled were evacuated on Saturday afternoon.
