Robber steals shogi pieces worth 450,000 dollars

Police in Osaka are looking for a man who stole about 40 sets of pieces of the Japanese board game shogi, worth around 450,000 dollars in total, from an exhibition facility.

Police say the robber walked into the facility in Yao City, operated by the manufacturer of shogi pieces, on Thursday morning.

After threatening an employee with a screwdriver and tying her hands behind her, he smashed the glass showcases and ran off with about 40 sets of shogi pieces.

The facility's operator said that some of the stolen items are made of expensive boxwood and are worth more than 45,000 dollars a set, making the total loss around 450,000 dollars.
