Search for missing Japanese in France ended

French investigative authorities say they discontinued the search for a Japanese university student last month. She went missing nearly 2 years ago.

Narumi Kurosaki was studying in the eastern French city of Besancon when she disappeared in December 2016.

French investigators put Nicolas Zepeda, a Chilean national, on the international wanted list on suspicion of murdering Kurosaki, his former girlfriend.

At a news conference on Monday, authorities say they believe Zepeda returned to his country via Spain and Switzerland after he killed Kurosaki.

A prosecutor in charge of the case said the authorities have done all they could in the past 2 years, and that there's nothing left to do in the search for her body.

Officials suggested they would contact Chilean authorities within a few weeks, with the aim of sending a French judge to the South American country to directly interview the suspect.
