Storm brings heavy rain to southwestern Japan

Severe tropical storm Ampil is lashing the Amami islands in southwestern Japan with heavy rain and strong winds.

The Meteorological Agency says that as of noon on Saturday, Ampil was 130 kilometers off Naha City on the island of Okinawa. The system is heading northwest at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

The agency says the storm is packing winds up to 90 kilometers per hour, and gusts reaching nearly 130 kilometers per hour.

Ampil is expected to bring heavy rain and thunder to Okinawa Prefecture and the southern part of Kyushu, one of Japan's main islands, as well as the Amami region, through Saturday evening.

Weather officials are warning people in Amami that there is a risk of landslides, floods, swollen rivers and high winds. Okinawa will also have strong winds and rough seas.
