Stormy weather forecast for northern Japan

Japanese weather officials are forecasting stormy weather for the northern Japan on Friday, and advised caution against gusty winds and high waves.

Japan Meteorological Agency officials say two developing low pressure systems are approaching northern Japan. They are expected to merge over the Sea of Okhotsk and gather force Friday night.

Strong winds are forecast from late Thursday in Hokuriku, and from the early Friday morning in northern Japan.

Maximum wind speeds through Friday should be about 83 kilometers per hour in Hokkaido and Tohoku, and 72 kilometers per hour in Hokuriku.

Sudden gusts are likely to be from 108 to 126 kilometers per hour.

High waves are also forecast. They may reach 7 meters in Hokkaido and Tohoku, and 6 meters in Hokuriku.

Strong winds and rough seas are expected to continue on Saturday, mainly in Hokkaido.

Kanto and the Izu Islands may experience unstable weather conditions through the early Friday morning. Lightning strikes, tornadoes, strong gusts and heavy rain are also possible.
