Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga is set to meet Okinawa's new governor Denny Tamaki in Tokyo this week.
Suga told reporters on Wednesday that Tamaki asked to visit the prime minister's office on Friday to formally report that he has been inaugurated as Okinawa governor.
Suga said he is arranging to meet Tamaki on that occasion. As for a meeting between Tamaki and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Suga said they are working on it.
Tamaki has made clear that he will continue to oppose the government's plan to relocate the US Futenma Air Station within Okinawa Prefecture.
