Suga stresses commitment to curbing emissions

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide says his government will try to report to the UN by next November on how it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions through 2030.

Suga made the remark in his video message for an on-line summit commemorating the fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement. Under the agreement, each country must determine and regularly report on its contributions to mitigate global warming.

The prime minister said Japan seeks to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. He said such efforts will not hinder economic growth, but would instead spur it. He added his government will try to achieve a green society through revolutionary innovation.

In 2016, Japan set a target of cutting emissions by 26 percent from fiscal 2013 levels by fiscal 2030.

Suga said officials will discuss how Japan will reduce emissions through 2030 based on the government's new goal. The prime minister added he hopes to report on the result to the UN by next November, when a UN climate change conference, called COP 26, will be held in Britain.

He also said he is determined to lead efforts to achieve a zero-carbon society, which is the goal of the Paris Agreement.
