Suntory targets China's health-conscious consumers

Japanese beverage firm Suntory Holdings is launching a health food business in China to meet growing demand.

Sources say the company has entered into a joint venture in Shanghai with Citic, China's government-affiliated conglomerate.

Suntory contributed 65 percent of the capital of about 14 million dollars, and sent an executive as its chief.

The venture will first begin online sales of Suntory's energy drinks, and offer drip coffee through vending machines. Health supplements are likely to be sold later.

Suntory already sells whisky and soft drinks in China. It's now targeting the country's growing number of affluent, health-conscious consumers.
