Suspected Land Fraud Mastermind Arrested

Suspected land fraud mastermind arrested

Police have arrested one of the alleged masterminds of a fraud ring that bilked a major Japanese homebuilder of a large sum of money.

This brings to 17 the number of ring members arrested in connection with the scam.

The 59-year-old suspect, formerly called Misao Koyama, is believed to have helped orchestrate a fraudulent land transaction.

Police were waiting for Koyama when he arrived at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Friday evening. He had been deported from the Philippines, where he had fled in October.

Koyama is suspected of forging ownership documents for a 2,000-square-meter plot of land in Shinagawa Ward, central Tokyo. Homebuilder Sekisui House paid about 58 million dollars for the plot.

They will try to piece together Koyama's actions over the past two months to determine his involvement in the case.
