Takakeisho Withdraws From Tournament Due To Injury

Takakeisho withdraws from tournament due to injury

New ozeki champion Takakeisho has withdrawn from the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament after injuring his right knee.

Stable master Chiganoura made the announcement on Thursday, the fifth day of the tournament.

Takakeisho felt pain in his right knee after winning his bout with Mitakeumi on Wednesday, giving him a total of three wins and one loss. Takakeisho had lost the previous five bouts against his rival.

Chiganoura says Takakeisho has injured an ligament in his right knee and the wrestler's doctor says he will need about three weeks to recover.

This is the second time that Takakeisho has withdrawn from a tourney. He pulled out of the spring tournament last year.

Chiganoura also told reporters that it would be impossible for Takakeisho to continue taking part as he is in considerable pain.

He said he believes pulling out of the tournament is the only option as Takakeisho cannot end his career now.

The stable master said he wants Takakeisho to take time to focus on his treatment to ensure that he will be able to compete in the next tournament.
