Temperatures soar across many parts of Japan

Temperatures soared across most of Japan on Tuesday, with the mercury topping 35 degrees Celsius in southern and western regions.

The Meteorological Agency says clear skies brought by a high pressure system extending from western to northeastern Japan, combined with an influx of warm air from the south, have caused temperatures to soar.

By 1:30 p.m., the mercury in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture had hit 35.6 degrees. Temperatures of 35 degrees were also recorded in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, and Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture.

Meanwhile in Tokyo, the temperature rose to 31 degrees, the highest this year.

Officials called on people to be careful of heatstroke, as their bodies are still not accustomed to the heat, while face masks pose an additional burden.

The Environment Ministry says people should avoid heavy exercise when wearing a mask, frequently drink fluids and remove their masks when they are able to maintain an appropriate social distance.
