Tokyo 2020 Organizers Plan To Cut Costs Further

Tokyo 2020 organizers plan to cut costs further

The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and the International Olympic Committee have decided to work together to cut costs further for the postponed Games.

The 2020 summer Games have been postponed until the summer of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The question now is how much additional costs will be needed, and how the burden of costs should be shared.

The organizing committee of the Tokyo Games and the International Olympic Committee held a video conference and issued a joint statement.

IOC Coordination Commission Chair John Coates said the costs should be reduced further through a rigorous review of service levels for all areas of the Games.

Coates stopped short of mentioning what the IOC's share of burden of additional costs would be. But he said the IOC "will not stand by and see our international federations collapse."

The IOC and the Japanese side agreed that the present plans for the venues and competition schedules will be retained and they will discuss the matter with officials of the games venues.
