Tokyo starts consultation in 14 languages

The Tokyo metropolitan government has set up a phone consultation center to provide information on the coronavirus in 14 languages. Officials say they want to give needed support to respond to growing anxiety among foreigners living under the state of emergency.

The metropolitan government began the service from Friday.

Staff at the center can receive consultations in the languages shown in the graphic: Easy Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Indonesian, Tagalog, Thai, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Cambodian, and Burmese.

The center is open from 10a.m. to 5p.m. on weekdays.

People can ask a variety of questions about their health conditions, businesses, children's education, or on immigration status. The center would connect the callers to designated health care centers or other public sections to provide them with necessary support.

Approximately 50 staffs are on stand-by working remotely from home.

The number is toll-free within Japan, 0120-296-004.

Officials say they would like to give utmost assistance to 570,000 foreigners living in Tokyo at the time of the emergency.
