Tokyo stocks kick off 2017 strong with sharp gainsStocks made a robust start to 2017 thanks to across-the-board buying on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Wednesday, adding to the festive mood created by a ceremony to mark the start of the year’s trading.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei average surged 479.79 points, or 2.51 percent, from Friday, the last session of 2016, to end at 19,594.16, the highest closing level in almost 13 months. The strong start came after the Nikkei scored an annual gain for the fifth straight year in 2016.

On Wednesday morning, a TSE ceremony to celebrate the start of trading in 2017 was attended by guests, as well as executives and other exchange workers, such as kimono-clad women.
