Torrential rain forecast for Kyushu

Japanese weather officials are warning of possible landslides and flooding in low-lying areas of southern Kyushu as torrential rain is forecast through Sunday.

In one hour through 8 p.m., 35.5 millimeters of rain fell on Ibusuki City in Kagoshima Prefecture. Miyazaki City had 27.5 millimeters.

Authorities have issued a landslide alert in parts of Saga, Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures.

The seasonal rain front is expected to bring more than 50 millimeters of hourly rainfall to northern Kyushu and Shikoku through Sunday morning and to southern Kyushu through noon.

Southern Kyushu can expect up to 250 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours through Sunday evening. Northern Kyushu and Shikoku can expect 180 millimeters.

Tornadoes, strong gusts and lightning strikes are also possible.
