Torrential rain triggered nearly 450 mudslides

Japan's land ministry says record rainfall in the western part of the country has triggered mudslides in at least 448 places in 29 of the nation's 47 prefectures.

Ministry officials say that as of 6 AM on Wednesday, 331 mudslides occurred on steep slopes and cliffs, 102 mainly along rivers, and 15 mainly on gentle slopes.

By prefecture, Hiroshima had the most mudslides at 58, followed by Ehime with 48.

The officials say the tally will likely increase as they have yet to grasp the full extent of the damage.
