Toshiba announced plans on Tuesday for an alliance of more than 100 firms and organizations that will develop Internet of Things services.
Major companies such as Softbank and Kyocera, start-up firms and universities are among those expected to join the ifLink Open Community.
Toshiba says combining the expertise of the members will lead to new services for homes and businesses.
That could include water-drop sensors that alert building owners to water leakage, or a smartphone app that can monitor elderly people by tracking the opening and closing of a door.
Toshiba hopes to launch the alliance as early as next spring.
