Tourists enjoy fresh seafood in northern Japan

A large number of people visited a famed food market in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido on Thursday, the start of a four-day weekend.

More than 40 fishmongers and other workers serve a variety of delicacies fresh from the sea and farms at Washo Ichiba market, which is located in the center of Kushiro city.

Just a day earlier, the government's "Go To Travel" tourism promotion campaign kicked off to coincide with the start of the long weekend.

Many people from Hokkaido and further afield savored local delicacies while taking precautions to avoid coronavirus infections by disinfecting their hands and keeping their distance from other visitors.

A 63-year-old man visiting the market from Sapporo with his grandchildren said he was exercising caution to avoid catching the virus and infecting others. He added he was looking forward to returning to normal life as soon as possible.

A representative of the market's operator, Kakita Hideki, said he hopes the "Go To Travel" campaign will bring back tourists. He said he is expecting both the shops and customers to take thorough anti-infection measures so that everyone can have a good time.
