Trump arrives in Japan on state visit

US President Donald Trump has arrived in Japan for a four-day state-visit.

Trump landed at Haneda Airport in Tokyo onboard Air Force One at around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

He will attend a reception with Japanese business leaders at the US ambassador's residence in Tokyo on Saturday evening.

On Monday, Trump will become the first foreign head of state to meet Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako following the Emperor's accession on May 1.

He will then hold summit talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The leaders are expected to discuss bilateral trade negotiations and other issues including China, North Korea and Iran.

Attention is focused on whether Trump will press for concessions in the trade talks.

On Sunday, Trump is scheduled to play golf with Abe, and then attend the final day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament at the Kokugikan sumo arena in Tokyo. He will present a special trophy to the winning wrestler.

A senior US official says the visit will focus on celebrating the start of Japan's new Reiwa era that began with the Emperor's accession.
