U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, U.S. media reported Tuesday, with Trump tweeting that Tillerson will be replaced by Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo.
"Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!" he said on Twitter.
Tillerson was sworn in as the U.S. secretary of state on Feb. 1, 2017, under the Trump administration.
His departure had been rumored given that he has been at odds with Trump's White House on a range of matters such as the North Korean nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear deal.
