Police say two elementary schoolgirls were found dead in a condominium complex in the city of Toyota in central Japan's Aichi Prefecture on Tuesday night. Police suspect they jumped from the building with the intent of committing suicide.
They were sixth-graders who attended the same elementary school.
Investigative sources say the girls did not live in the condominium building but left notes saying that they had been bullied. The notes contained no details about who carried out the bullying or why.
The city's Board of Education held a news conference on Wednesday morning.
Officials say the girls were in separate classes and were to attend a graduation ceremony next week.
They say the children attended classes regularly and left school as usual on Tuesday.
The board said that surveys they conduct a few times each year did not find any signs of students being bullied.
