U.S. author chronicles aftermath of Nagasaki A-bombingSusan Southard spent 12 years documenting the aftermath of the 1945 atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Nagasaki and the life of its survivors, publishing her findings in a book last year.

The 59-year-old American author, who lives in Tempe, Arizona, published "Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War" in the year marking the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing and the subsequent end of World War II.

She said she hopes her book will make people in her home country "feel like they knew survivors personally and the city."
