U.n. Security Council Convenes On N. Korea Nuclear Test

U.N. Security Council convenes on N. Korea nuclear testThe U.N. Security Council convened an emergency session Tuesday to discuss its response to North Korea's third nuclear test conducted earlier in the day in defiance of previous council resolutions.

The 15-nation council is expected to discuss a resolution on expanding the scope of sanctions against North Korea after already warning in its last resolution adopted Jan. 22 that it would take "significant action" in the event of a rocket launch or nuclear test by the country.

North Korea announced Tuesday it had conducted a successful nuclear test, with its official news agency saying it was defending the country's security and sovereignty after the United States violated its "legitimate right" to launch satellites for peaceful purposes.
