US official: Henoko the only solution

A US State Department spokesperson has suggested that a plan to build an airfield in Henoko, Okinawa Prefecture, is the only way to avoid the continued use of the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station, also in the prefecture.

The comment was part of a response to an inquiry by NHK.

It said the United States and Japan remain committed to the plan to construct Futenma's replacement facility in the Henoko area, and that it is "the only solution that addresses operational, political, financial and strategic concerns."

There was no response to NHK's request for a comment on the deepening rift between Japan's government and Okinawa Prefecture over the plan.
