US residents of Japan vote in Democratic primary

US residents of Japan voted in a Democratic Party presidential primary on Sunday that is being held in 44 countries and territories.

Ballot stations were set up in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Many people came to the polling station in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward when it opened at noon.

The person in charge wore a facemask as a precaution against the coronavirus while explaining the procedures.

The primary race is between centrist former Vice President Joe Biden, who pulled off a comeback on Super Tuesday, and left-leaning Senator Bernie Sanders.

A 48-year-old man who works for a furniture retailer says he decided to vote for Biden at the last minute, and he thinks Biden is trying to bring the country together.

A 37-year-old English teacher said she voted for Sanders, and she hopes he will win because she thinks the United States should have an insurance system like Japan's.

John Baumlin, the National Chair of Democrats Abroad Japan, said he wants Democrats in Japan to know they can vote and he hopes that many will.
