Victims Of 2014 Mudslides In Hiroshima Remembered

Victims of 2014 mudslides in Hiroshima remembered

People in the city of Hiroshima, western Japan, have remembered the victims of a series of landslides caused by heavy rain six years ago.

Rain of more than 100 millimeters per hour caused landslides at 166 locations in the city on August 20, 2014, directly or indirectly killing 77 people.

A memorial service was held on Sunday in the Asaminami district, which was hit hard by the disaster. About 50 people, including bereaved families, took part.

A man representing residents affected by the disaster said they will never forget that 25 people lost their lives in the district and will pass on the lessons and experience of the disaster to future generations.

Participants then laid flowers in front of a cenotaph and offered prayers for the victims.

A woman who lost her younger sister and niece in the landslides said she wants to tell people about the disaster and the importance of evacuating swiftly in the event of a disaster.

A dam to prevent mudslides was completed in Hiroshima ahead of the sixth anniversary of the disaster.

But many people have already moved to other areas. Local municipalities face the challenge of creating communities that residents think are safe.
