Volunteers from across Japan are cleaning up homes that were flooded by Typhoon Hagibis a week ago.
In Tokyo's Ota Ward, damaged furniture has been stacked up along roadsides. The southern part of the ward was inundated when a tributary of the Tama River overflowed.
About 50 volunteers gathered at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday in the Denenchofu district. They loaded carts with buckets and shovels before heading to their assigned homes.
They took away furniture that had been ruined by the floodwater, and put mud in bags for disposal.
A company employee in his 50s said he never imagined that damage on this scale could occur in the area where he lives. He said he wants to help people resume their normal lives as soon as possible.
