A tropical storm is approaching the southern shores of Japan's archipelago. Weather officials are warning of heavy rain across many areas of the country.
Tanabe City in Wakayama Prefecture had over 39 millimeters of rain between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
The Meteorological Agency said unstable atmospheric conditions are expected over a wide area of the country due to a weather front and a low pressure system.
There is a chance of downpours and thundershowers into the predawn hours on Friday in western Japan, and through the morning in eastern Japan.
The agency is urging residents to stay on alert for mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas and river overflows. Caution is also advised for strong winds, high waves, lightning strikes and tornados.
