Welfare costs to jump 40% to 5.2 tril. yen in FY 2025The total cost of livelihood subsidies is expected to reach 5.2 trillion yen in fiscal 2025, up 40 percent from 3.7 trillion yen in the current year through next March, an estimate by the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry showed Saturday.

As welfare costs, which totaled 2.2 trillion yen in fiscal 2002, are steadily rising, the ministry forecast will inevitably stir debate on how to make recipients more self-reliant and how to check welfare fraud.

Annual welfare benefit costs are expected to reach 4.1 trillion yen in fiscal 2015, 4.6 trillion yen in fiscal 2020 and 5.2 trillion yen in fiscal 2025, according to the estimate.
