Cold air has blanketed Tokyo and its surrounding regions. Some mountainous areas saw unseasonal snowfall.
Temperatures plunged to mid-winter levels on Wednesday. The temperature in central Tokyo was 4.9 degrees Celsius at 2 p.m.
More than 20 centimeters of snow accumulation was observed in some areas near mountains.
Snow fell on Hitsujiyama Park in Chichibu City, north of Tokyo, which boasts more than 1,000 cherry trees.
A man said it's rare to see cherry trees in full bloom blanketed in snow.
At Matsumoto Castle, a popular tourist destination in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, the roof of the main tower was covered by snow. A tourist said it's too cold for April, but cherry trees and flowers in the snow are beautiful.
In Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo, some schools were closed due to snow. Also in the prefecture, the snowy weather was reportedly a factor in a number of car accidents.
